The history of skimboarding

Skimboarding is a water sport that was invented around 1920 in Laguna Beach, California. The origins of the sport can be traced back to the lifeguards of Laguna Beach, namely George Griffeth and his friend Jimmy. They built round discs out of redwood and glided on them across the water. These early skimboards were about five feet long, straight, and were towed behind a boat, similar to wakeboarding.

Over time, the shape of skimboards evolved. Initially, round boards were used, which were then extended into oval shapes by the locals in Laguna Beach to better ride the waves close to the shore. This development marked the beginning of the skimboarding renaissance.
The pioneer of skimboarding, George Griffeth, joined this emerging sport at the age of about 11. Initially, skimboarding was referred to as "skidboarding," but when Victoria Skimboards was founded in 1976, the name changed to "skimboarding."
Over time, two main disciplines developed in skimboarding: wave skimboarding and flatland skimboarding. Wave skimboarding involves riding the waves, while flatland skimboarding takes place on flat waters or even in urban environments.

Skimboarding gained popularity over the next few decades and spread to the northwest of Canada and Europe. Small skimboarding communities formed, training on rivers, lakes, and ponds.

The first official skimboard world championship was held in 1976 at Aliso Beach. In the 1980s, companies like Victoria Skimboards introduced the first fiberglass and resin-coated foam skimboards to the market. This brought a new boost to the sport and led to skimboards being available in surf shops alongside surfboards.

In the following years, skimboarding experienced ups and downs. There were periods of popularity and periods where skimboard sales declined. After a brief lull, however, the sport regained popularity. New magazines and competitions emerged, and the skimboarding community grew once again.

Skimboarding is a sport influenced by surfing and skateboarding. Nowadays, skimboards are technologically advanced, combining elements from the aerospace industry with craftsmanship. Companies like Victoria Skimboards, Exile Skimboards, and Zap Skimboards dominate the skimboard market.

The United Skim Tour (UST) is an organization that has been operating the most successful skimboard world championship since 2006. The Vic, which has been held since 1977, is the oldest skimboarding competition in the world.
