The Fish Surfboard - Retro Fishboard vs. Performance Fish Surfboard

When it comes to the fishboard, the question is which surfing style you follow. A surfboard with retro characteristics can be surfed very loosely and you have to surf more in the flow of the wave. If you are more of a lazy surfer dude, then a fishboard with retro characteristics as a twin fin is exactly the right surfboard for you. The wave yield is great and your fish generates a lot of speed.

With a performance fish, things are a little different. These surfboards are very manoeuvrable and generate a lot of speed, but are much more forgiving than a Retro Fish. The sharp-edged rails cut into the water and let you conjure up precise cutbacks into the wave wall. A performance fish usually comes with a quad fin setup, but can of course also be surfed as a twinser. Both styles have their justification and can bring you a lot of fun.

A fishboard is the perfect surfboard if you have previously surfed a Mini Malibu and now want to switch to a shorter board. A high-performance fish is not the right choice here and is more in the category of hybrid boards.

As a small upgrade, a Malibu or Mini Malibu Shape is recommended. These boards are forgiving and guarantee you a high wave yield. If you surf safely with these boards, you are ready for the next step.

Which surfboard is perfect for me?

If you surf small waves, you surf a mini-Malibu safely and are looking for a smaller surfboard, then an Evolution Shape or Funboard is the right choice. These shapes are a little more agile, but still more forgiving than short boards. Do you want to surf a short surfboard? Then a fishboard is the right choice. Only when you can surf these boards safely is it advisable to switch to a hybrid board and then a short board. A surfboard suits you if you can surf enough waves with it safely. Surfboards for beginners are between 7 and 8 feet long and have a width of at least 21 inches.
Funboards and Evolution shapes are between 6ft 8 inches and 7 ft 6 inches long and have a width of 20 - 21 inches.

Intermediate: 0,45 x body weight (0,45 x 80Kg = 36Liter)

Which surfboard is perfect for kids?

A Mini-Malibu Shape is the perfect surfboard for children and beginners. Children who are not yet safe surfers should take their first steps on softboards, because foamies protect you from injuries. A surfboard for children who are just starting to surf should not be so long. A length between 6 and 7 ft is recommended.

Which fin setup should I choose for a surfboard?

There are surfboards with all kinds of fin set ups. Which fin setup you should choose depends on what kind of waves you want to surf, which shape you prefer and which surf style you follow.

Single Fin: For retro surfing. Single fins are used on longboards, retro midsize funboards and high performance shortboard single fin boards.

2 + 1: The 2 + 1 setup is also very popular with soul surfers. This ensures that you can surf the boards in a more performance-oriented way, because the two small side fins give the board more hold in the wave wall, especially on down-the-line rides. This fin setup is also very demanding to surf and is often used on longboards, funboards and some hybrid shapes.

4 + 1: The 4 + 1 setup is also very popular with soul surfers.
